TWO VARIATIONS ON A SUPPER COURSE FOR MICHAEL B. RHOADES' BIRTHDAY.......

Image
A milder version  and a spicer variation.....green curry shrimp with tabouli, Nepalese basmanti saffron & tumeric rice,  walnuts, pickled shredded bok choy leaves, roasted garlic, and minced mangosteen rind.....served, slightly chilled to 70F, with a cherry vodka, orange bitters and absinthe martini.....stirred, not shaken........

On this freezingly cold afternoon....a warm, toasted croissant, piled with curried chicken salad, tabouli and couscous salad and a smidgen of leftover roasted yellow corn.........

7 MINUTES FROM FREEZER & FRIDGE TO BOWL.........

Image
THE 'CHEAPEST OF THE CHEAP'  FROZEN 'POT PIE', MICROWAVED FOR 5 MINUTES.....ODDLY ENOUGH,  ACHIEVING A TASTY, FLAKY CRUST........THEN SCRAPED OUT OF ITS COOKING CONTAINER INTO A BOWL OF PAD THAI SAUCE, BITS OF LEFTOVER HAM, CORIANDER PASTE, VERY COARSE GROUND BLACK PEPPER AND CHOPPED GREEN SCALLIONS........VOILA!    AND...JUST A BOWL AND SPOON TO WASH, AFTER THIS $3 LUNCHEON!

some fiery South Indian Madras fare to rattle my aching bones.......fried tofu in Madras curry sauce, brown rice with hard-candied pineapple and ginger, crushed fenugreek seeds, coriander seeds and cumin seeds..cooked in coconut oil......leftover hot, spicy spinach, cooked with eggs and Burmese condiments.......and lots of Assam tea with ginger....to drive Winter aches away!

playing with the old 'pressure cooker'.....successfully...fortunately...... cranking out one of my Grandmother's favorite meals.....golden beets, small potatoes and carrots, shiitake mushrooms and, of course, a pork roast.....all done under pressure, with cognac French herbes.......sorry, Porky!

TOMORROW, THE LEFTOVERS WILL BE A STEW, WITH THE THICKENED PAN DRIPPINGS

within the continuum of this morning's ramblings.......about the 'layers' of consciousness and doors to perception......this thinking 'layered' my luncheon preparation..........deep-fried polenta cakes, swathed with coriander chutney, then piled with 5 kinds of differently seasoned beans, corn kernels, red peppers and brown rice, topped with sliced scallions and fresh-cut cilantro........perfect! my palate is sooo grateful...especially after being soothed with homemade mango iced cream, bergamot tea and macadamia nut shortbread 'dipping' cookies, dipped in molten chocolate.......I'm even devouring the 'sharing' serving.......
