YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, AFTER ALL...........




I have a set of a dozen beautiful porcelain dessert plates....but, have never eaten from them because the decorations may have lead in the enamels......and, the manufacturer 'warns' of the danger of food 'contamination' by lead, cautioning us that the plates are 'only for decoration'..........This morning, I spoke with an oncologist, who said "just don't eat hot or runny foods from them....only pastries and 'hand' foods......... A consolation! I can have a creme puff, served on the beautiful plates, that have long-languished, in boxes, in the basement, behind the water heater for 36 years! .....black pariahs, covered with gold, silver....and lead! In more naive times, American homes were supplied water.....my own, included....through heavy LEAD pipes' so, how much more dangerous could a scone on a plate be?

  Experimental Lunch.....a croissant pastry 'box' filled with crowder and black-eyed peas, okra, onions, scallions, ginger, chilis, orzo, mushrooms, diced dried apricots, green curry, Madras curry, rasam, dried dill pickle, green dragon sauce, olive bruschetta, and sweet red peppers in harissa salsa and 'painted' with hoi sin sauce/walnut oil..... served with a ladle of marinated red peppers, corn salsa, gyoza sauce and hoi sin ....i.e. clean out the fridge......a tasty little loaf......   yet, Americans still awaken after sleeping on their fat asses, declaring "I'm starving to death!".....as they raid their fridges and stovetops  for yesterday's high-calorie leftovers..... This Thursday.....Thanksgiving Day.....a couple of hundred million people will be gorging on the 'products' seen on this table.....with little variation.......

this picnic 'fruitcake on the grass' was never mentioned in Jane Austin's novel.....nor would these ladies have been served from the pedestrian, mustard-colored plate like the one I utilized this morning....

Ginger tea, preserved orange and lemon peels in honey, with English walnuts atop chia seed, and cognac-marinated black raisin fruitcake fill the bill on a chilly morning......reconstructed from a taste-memory from last night's Muted-Colour Dream of High Tea at Harrods, 40 years ago......displacing a rather boring pre-dawn intention to have a poached egg on sourwood toast......demonstrating how dreams can enhance the ordinariness of a chilly, housebound morning, viewing...for the umpteenth time......Ang Lee's hyper-detailed romantic study of Jane Austin's "Sense & Sensibility"s focus on elegant dining at a well-appointed Table....guests, all in beautiful Jenny Beavan finery.......may I utilize your dessert fork, if you will, Zack MacLeod Pinsent, since you can, surely, nibble this...even while wearing white gloves?
